One feature of Jiu Jitsu is the Spider Guard and its a very useful and modern guard that employs double arm control over the guard passer. This is the guard where if you really want to hold somebody, you can. Passing this guard is also very dangerous because movement often leads to dangerous sweeps and submissions:this can be quite frustrating for the passer. Learn this guard and get used to the idea of 'riding' your opponents movements and guiding him like a puppet master.

When you use this guard be careful when trying to adapt your grips. Adapting collar grips to grips that break posture is not so hard to do without the gi, but grabbing both arms and holding on to play a true spider game is very difficult when there is nothing to grab on to. The grips are just too easy to break. This is a gi grappling guard that is difficult to apply in the context of MMA or submission wrestling. It can be a winning guard, but in the long term it can be detrimental to your development because it forces you to focus too much on the gi. A great place to learn the Spider Guard is at the Jiu Jitsu school now open near Magnolia, Todd Mission, Stoneham and Hempstead areas.

Once you establish the spider guard, it is critical to have complete control over your opponent every single step of the way. Never attempt to transition to both spider hooks at the same time: you will to lose control and your opponent will pass. Instead, develop a methodical circular leg movement to remove your opponents grips one by one. Once your spider guard is in place, acquaint yourself with using alternating leg pushes and pulls to offset your opponents balance and to set up your own attacks.

If your opponent tries to circle his hands above your shins or below your calves, watch out - he is trying to break your grip! You can combat this with side to side hip movement, circling your feet and pus pull leg extensions. If you do no react, you will find yourself in the following situations. Remember when you are in the Spider Guard, you must move.
